"On the coast of Michoacan, Maruata has been a mecca for some time now. The big Parties are Christmas and Easter. No hotels, only camping. Lots of drums and other music. The locals are Nahuatl Indians, and extremely friendly. Best beach on the West Coast of Mexico. Good herb for around five dollars an ounce, plus the occasional peyote surprise. Please bring sheets of blotter acid, there's always a terrible shortage. Things are a bit weird since the gathering of '95-'96 but there's always room for a few more freaks."

My Score:

Comment: I was there for a gathering,probably 95/96.
There was a miniature "tsunami".Two people drowned, probably someone from Mexico and a German. It was christmas, sunny and calm, and afterwards,at night it rained(quite unusual).Does anyone know the cause of the "tsunami".Was it an under-ocean earthquake?Or nuclear testing in the south-pacific?Or non of the above? leo

Comment: i went in spring 2001 and had an amaaaazing time, it was so beautiful, inspiring, powerful and had a nice group of campers on the hippie side, mostly chill with bonfires-drum circles, communal meals, fresh fish everyday. and the bud was the best i''ve ever had in mexico ! i''m going back to mexico in jan w/ my girlfriend and might try and get down there again though i hear its crowded at that time.

Comment: Maruata, Mexico. Enjoy yourselves, but don''t drink the water--don''t even bath in it...it can contain 25,000 times as much fecal coloform bacteria as is allowed in "pure" bottled water....and the other coloforms run up to 3,500,000 per 100ml:
http://oasisdesign.net/water/quality/village.htm

A lot of the fecal coloform comes from stoned hippies using the bush for a toilet.

Comment: Mikey, the best way to get down there would be t ofly to Zihuantanejo, then drive/bus up the coast. Or fly to Mexico City and Bus to either Zihuantanejo or even closer, but not worth seeing, Lazaro Cardenas. Good Luck. Hope you make it.

Comment: spent a couple of days there this May (04). Surf was pounding! Sun was sizzling! Smoke easliy available. Food tasted great but I still got a case of turista. Locals say that Ecoli poisoning is fairly common. The water table is only about 8ft below ground level and the bathroom situation seems to be pretty close to the wells. Cuida para su salud!

Comment: Maruata is a swell hangout, but just be careful of the young guys on bycicles who like to hang out by the tents like Vultures and then steal stuff when you are not looking. Nothing is worthless to them. Trust me, they will take just about anything. But, the beaches are beautiful and you can even surf there to get a break from La Ticla.
